A Stunning Small Home Made From Hemp

Hemp is a building material like no other.

It has incredible thermal properties, is environmentally friendly, rat and insect proof, fire and earthquake resistant and is an affordable way to build. Plus, the end result looks amazing!

What is Hempcrete and how does it compare to traditional construction materials?

As the world becomes more conscious of the negative effects of traditional construction materials, there is a growing desire for eco-friendly alternatives. One material that has been garnering attention recently is hemp. The plant has an incredible variety of applications, from textiles to paper, and now, even houses.

A stunning small home made from hemp has recently been completed in Asheville, North Carolina. The house, built by design firm Push Design, is a modern take on the traditional cabin. It is approximately 780 square feet, and features one bedroom, one bathroom, and an open-concept living area.

The house is constructed from Hempcrete, a material made from the woody core of the hemp plant mixed with lime and water. Not only is Hempcrete remarkably durable, but it also has excellent insulation properties. This means that the house is incredibly energy-efficient and requires very little heating or cooling. Additionally, Hempcrete is fire and pest-resistant, making it an ideal option for those looking to live sustainably.

The house’s interior is stunning, with exposed wooden beams and an abundance of natural light. The living area features a wood-burning stove, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The bedroom is situated in the loft area, and there is a small but functional bathroom on the main floor.

The house’s design is focused on sustainability, with numerous elements that reduce its environmental impact. The windows are triple-paned, and the roof features solar panels, which provide the house’s electricity. The plumbing is also designed to conserve water, with low-flow fixtures and a greywater system that recycles water from the sinks and shower.

As well as being eco-friendly, the house is also incredibly affordable. The total cost of construction was around $133,000, a fraction of the cost of many traditional homes. The use of Hempcrete also means that the house’s energy bills will remain low, keeping ongoing costs to a minimum.

The small home made from hemp is an excellent example of how sustainable building materials can be used to create beautiful, functional, and affordable homes. As awareness of the environmental impact of traditional building methods continues to grow, we can expect to see more innovative and exciting eco-friendly housing solutions like this one.
