Why India’s Fair Skin Business Is Booming

India is home to Bollywood, the world’s most prolific movie industry.

For those who dream of stardom, landing a leading role may depend on the color of your skin. India’s preference for fair skin has given rise to a skin-lightening industry worth nearly $500 million dollars.

VICE’s Gianna Toboni heads to Mumbai to find out how this cultural bias is fueling the booming business of fairer skin.

How has the availability of skin whitening products contributed to the growth of the fair skin business in India?

India is a country that has been known for its obsession with fair skin for decades. The society has set certain beauty standards that include having lighter skin tones. This has led to a booming fair skin business in the country as people are willing to go to any lengths to achieve a lighter complexion.

One of the reasons for the growth of the fair skin business in India is the socio-cultural factors. The society has created a stereotype where people with lighter skin tones are considered more beautiful, successful and privileged. This stereotype has been promoted in the media, cinema, and advertising, which has led to the normalization of such beliefs. Therefore, it has become a part of urban culture and people are willing to spend large amounts of money to fit into such beauty standards.

Another factor is the availability of a plethora of skin whitening products in the market. There are numerous options for people to choose from, ranging from creams, lotions, and skin treatments. Many of these products claim to be made of natural ingredients and promise an instant lightening effect. This has created a huge demand for such products among people who want to achieve a fairer complexion.

Additionally, the fair skin business is also driven by the increased expenditure capacity of people. With the rise in disposable income and exposure to western cultures, people tend to spend more on their beauty and skincare routine. This trend has led to the growth of the cosmetic industry in India, which includes skin whitening products.

However, the promotion of fair skin in India has been met with criticism and backlash. Many people have started questioning the fairness of such beauty standards and the impact they have on the society as a whole. The use of skin whitening products has also been associated with various health risks, including skin irritation, chemical burns, and even cancer.

In conclusion, the fair skin business in India is booming due to socio-cultural factors, availability of products, and the increased expenditure capacity of people. However, it is essential to question the fairness of such beauty standards and promote the idea of self-love and acceptance. The industry also must take responsibility and ensure that the products they promote are safe for use by the consumers.
