ABANDONED city in America with NO LAWS
A few months ago we went to visit the incredible abandoned city called Slab City.
It used to be a military base but hundreds of squatters came and made it their home. We went with our friend Justin Escalona and truly had a fascinating experience. We thought the place would be hostile and dangerous when in fact it was inviting and beautiful (in it’s own way).
How does the lack of laws affect the safety of both visitors and the preservation of the town?
In the United States of America, there exists an abandoned city with no laws. This city, known as Centralia, was once a thriving community in Pennsylvania that housed over 1,000 residents. However, in 1962, a coal mine fire erupted beneath the town and has been burning ever since. The fire caused a toxic gas leak that led to the evacuation of the city.
Today, Centralia remains a ghost town with no governing body or official laws. As the town is uninhabitable, there is no need for a local government to manage its affairs. The few remaining residents have no formal responsibilities or control over the town’s governance.
Despite its current abandonment, Centralia still attracts tourists who come to witness the eerie town that has been left to decay. Due to its lack of regulations, visitors can explore the town without restriction or consequence. Some visitors even venture into the closed-off areas, where the smoke from the underground fire seeps through the ground, creating a surreal and hazardous atmosphere.
However, with no laws to provide safety regulations or to limit tourists’ behavior, the situation poses a risk to visitors’ lives. Centralia is still prone to collapsing buildings and unpredictable ground conditions, making it a hazardous place to explore. Additionally, the toxic gas emissions from the underground fire can be deadly if inhaled for prolonged periods.
Without laws, it is challenging to prevent tourists from entering the area, and there is no control over their behavior once inside the town. This lack of governance can lead to vandalism, theft, and other criminal activity. Such activities pose threats to the property’s safety and preservation of what little remains of the town.
The abandoned city of Centralia remains a unique destination for adventurous travelers because of the eerie atmosphere of a town without a governing body. Nevertheless, visitors should be cautious when visiting this abandoned town because of the resident fire, unpredictable ground conditions, and the absence of laws to regulate behavior.
