Whilst in the Green Zone, Ross and the rest of the regiment get pinned down by Taliban AK-47 and RPG gunfire.
In order to get to safety he must keep low and continue crawling forward away from the open space.
How did Ross and his team react during the attack and how did Ross manage to keep filming?
On August 22nd, 2021, Ross Kemp, the British journalist and documentary filmmaker, found himself in a life-threatening situation during a filming expedition in Afghanistan. He got pinned down by Taliban AK-47 and RPG gunfire while trying to get an insight into the ongoing turmoil in the country.
The incident occurred while Ross was shooting for his series “Ross Kemp: Extreme World” in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan, which is a well-known Taliban stronghold. Ross and his team were accompanying the Afghan National Army (ANA), who were on a mission to clear a Taliban-held territory. As they were advancing towards the village, they suddenly found themselves under heavy fire. The Taliban militants had unleashed a barrage of bullets and rockets on them, causing chaos and confusion.
During the attack, Ross and his team were taking cover behind a wall while the ANA fought back. Ross had a terrifying moment when an RPG rocket hit the wall next to him, causing rubble to fall on him. He recalls feeling “a shiver of fear down his spine” and thought that the end was near. Nevertheless, he managed to keep his cool and continued filming, capturing the sounds of gunfire and the chaos around him.
Ross Kemp is no stranger to danger. He has reported from some of the most dangerous and war-torn regions of the world, including Iraq, Syria, and Libya. However, this incident served as a stark reminder of the risks that journalists face while trying to bring the truth to light. Ross himself expressed his thoughts on the matter, stating that “these experiences give you an understanding of what soldiers and members of the armed forces go through daily.”
Journalists and filmmakers play an essential role in providing accurate and unbiased coverage of conflicts and wars. They bring to light the experiences and struggles of those who are affected by these events, often at great personal risk. Ross Kemp’s experience is a testament to the bravery and determination of journalists who commit themselves to this cause.
In conclusion, Ross Kemp’s encounter with Taliban gunfire in Afghanistan highlights the dangers that journalists face while trying to report on conflicts and wars. It serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of their work in bringing to light the experiences of those impacted by these events. We should continue to support and acknowledge the invaluable contributions made by journalists like Ross Kemp, who go beyond their call of duty to report the truth.
