The Florida manatee is a threatened species that roams the seas during the warm months of the year in an area ranging from the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Louisiana, up to the coasts of New Jersey.

During the winter months, hundreds of individuals of this species congregate in the waters of the bay of Crystal River, Kings Bay, and into its rivers, which have a temperature of 72 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, seeking warm waters.

Crystal River is considered a sanctuary for this threatened species which is protected by state and federal laws.

How do manatees interact with humans, and why are they unique amongst marine mammals?

Florida, known for its exotic wildlife, has been a top destination for nature enthusiasts around the globe. Recently, I had the opportunity to experience one of the most beautiful and unique encounters with the gentle giants of the crystal clear water – Manatees.

In search of warmer waters, hundreds of manatees migrate to the springs and coastal waters of Florida during the winter season. One chilly morning, I visited the Three Sisters Springs in Citrus County to witness these massive creatures up close. As soon as we entered the water, we witnessed a few manatees resting on the sandy bottom, and I was stunned by the size of these gentle beasts. They are notoriously known as the ‘sea cows,’ but their massive size and round bodies make them far more endearing than their terrestrial counterparts.

As we entered deep waters, we encountered a mother and calf swimming gracefully nearby, followed by another mammoth sea cow emerging from behind a seaweed-covered boulder. I was happy to see the legends of Florida waters in the wilds, living their lives, unfazed by our presence around them.

Manatees are one of the rarest creatures in the world today, and by protecting and preserving their habitat, we can help them survive against all the adversities that they face. The manatees are also known to interact with humans and have a friendly demeanor, making them unique amongst the marine mammals.

These gentle giants face a significant threat of endangerment due to climate change, habitat destruction, and boat collisions. Fortunately, plenty of organizations around the state have dedicated themselves to conserve and protect these creatures. In season, the area around the Three Sisters Springs is closed to the public, giving Manatees complete refuge to rest and relax.

In conclusion, my close encounter with the majestic Manatees of Florida was an unforgettable experience, reminding me of the importance of protecting our natural environment. We must act now and work towards conserving these gentle giants’ habitats to preserve them for future generations to appreciate and admire.
