Ginger Spice Tells the Story Behind Her Union Jack Dress

“I’ve always been a secret fashion designer.”

Geri Horner, known to much of the world as “Ginger Spice,” explains how her famous Union Jack dress with the Spice Girls came to be.

Why was there controversy surrounding the Union Jack dress after Geri Halliwell’s performance at the Brit Awards?

Ginger Spice, aka Geri Halliwell, is well-known for her fashion sense, and one iconic moment in particular. The Union Jack dress she wore during the Spice Girls’ 1997 Brit Awards performance has gone down in history as one of the most unforgettable fashion moments of all time. But what was the inspiration behind the dress, and how did it become such a sensation?

In an interview with Vogue, Ginger Spice opened up about the story behind the dress. She explained that the idea came to her after seeing a similar outfit worn by a friend. “She had a Union Jack tea towel tied around her waist,” Halliwell recalled. “It was a joke, but I loved the idea.”

From there, the idea quickly grew into something much more ambitious. Halliwell worked with a costume designer to create a full-length Union Jack dress, complete with a cut-out neckline and a thigh-high slit. The dress was a bold statement, celebrating British culture and identity in a way that was unapologetic and dynamic.

But while Halliwell loved the dress, not everyone was on board. In fact, the night before the Brit Awards, the Spice Girls’ stylists tried to convince her to wear something else. “They were worried it would be too controversial,” Halliwell revealed. “But I said, ‘I’m wearing it anyway.’ I knew it was going to be a moment.”

And a moment it was. Halliwell’s performance in the dress was electric, capturing the attention of audiences across the world. But the dress also sparked controversy, with some critics arguing that it was insensitive and inappropriate to use the British flag as a fashion accessory.

For Halliwell, however, the dress was never meant to be disrespectful or provocative. “To me, it was a celebration of being British,” she explained. “It was about embracing our culture and our heritage, and celebrating diversity.”

Today, the Union Jack dress continues to be a cultural touchstone, embodying the spirit of the Spice Girls and the bold, daring fashion of the 1990s. And as for Halliwell, she remains proud of the dress and the statement it made.

“I wouldn’t change a thing,” she declared. “I think it’s important to be true to yourself and your convictions. And if that means wearing a Union Jack dress, so be it.”
