This mini-documentary follows Stewart McPherson’s journey to Tristan da Cunha, the most remote inhabited island in the world.

We meet the Tristanians and an interview with ex-chief islander Harold Green reveals what life is like in Tristan’s only settlement, Edinburgh of the Seven Seas.

What is the history behind the people of Tristan da Cunha?

Life on Tristan da Cunha – the World’s Most Remote Inhabited Island

Tristan da Cunha, located in the southern Atlantic Ocean, is known as the world’s most remote inhabited island. It is over 2,400 kilometers away from South Africa and 3,360 kilometers away from South America. The island, which is part of the British Overseas Territory, is home to fewer than 300 people, who live a unique and isolated way of life.

The inhabitants of Tristan da Cunha are descended from a group of shipwrecked sailors who landed on the island in 1816. Since then, the island has been inhabited by a small community that has managed to maintain their unique way of life despite being so far from the rest of the world.

Due to its remote location, the only way to get to Tristan da Cunha is by boat. The journey takes about a week and can only be made during the summer months because of the treacherous seas during the winter. The island has no airport, so visitors and supplies are brought in by boat a few times a year.

Life on Tristan da Cunha is very different from life in most other parts of the world. The island is only 11 kilometers long and 7 kilometers wide, so everything is within walking distance. There are no restaurants or shops, and electricity and internet are limited. The people of Tristan da Cunha must be self-sufficient and rely on fishing, agriculture, and sheep farming for their livelihoods.

The islanders have a strong sense of community and work together to maintain their way of life. Everyone has a job, and each person plays an important role in the island’s economy. The people of Tristan da Cunha take pride in their unique way of life and have a deep connection to their land and traditions.

Despite being so isolated, the islanders of Tristan da Cunha have managed to stay connected with the outside world. They have their own radio station, and the internet has allowed them to communicate with people all over the world. However, they still maintain their own unique culture and way of life.

Living on Tristan da Cunha is not for everyone. The isolation and harsh living conditions can be challenging, but for those who call the island home, it is a life full of natural beauty, community, and tradition. The people of Tristan da Cunha have managed to maintain their unique way of life for over 200 years, and their resilience and connection to their land and community are an inspiration to people all over the world.
