How to Make Stone Tools in a Survival Situation

If you’re in the wilderness and have nothing, perhaps the most important thing you need is a sharp, durable edge.

Humans are among the weakest species on the planet and tools are what help us compensate for that lack of strength. Dr. Bill Schindler, a professor of archeology and anthropology at Washington College, explains how to construct some primitive stone tools that could be useful in a survival situation.

How can one become proficient in flintknapping to create different types of tools?

In a survival situation, one of the most important skills to have is the ability to make tools from scratch, including stone tools. Making stone tools may seem like a daunting task, but it is an important skill to have as it can help ensure your survival in a primitive environment.

Firstly, it is important to choose the right type of stone for making tools. Flint and chert are some of the best stones to use for making stone tools, as they are hard and brittle, making it easier to chip flakes off of them to create a sharp edge. It is also important to look for stones that are free of cracks or blemishes that could cause them to break when working on them.

Next, you will need to use a process of flintknapping to create the desired shape for your tool. Flintknapping is the technique of striking a flint or chert stone with another rock to create flakes or blades that can be used as tools. This process requires a bit of practice, but with time, you will be able to create a variety of stone tools such as knives, arrowheads, and scrapers.

To begin flintknapping, you’ll need to choose the right size and shape of the stone. Holding the stone with one hand and a hard object in the other, gently strike the edge of the stone to create a sharp flake. Continue striking until you have the desired shape and thickness for your tool.

Once you have created a sufficient number of flakes, it’s time to get to work on shaping them into the tool you want. Start by shaping the edges to create a sharp blade. After this, you can work on shaping the rest of the tool, using the flakes to scrape off excess material until you have the desired shape.

It is important to be careful when working with sharp edges, so as not to injure yourself. Consider wearing gloves or wrapping the tool in fabric to protect your hands.

Making stone tools can be a lengthy and time-consuming process, but it is a valuable skill to have in a survival situation. By practicing flintknapping and learning to make stone tools, you will be better prepared to survive in a primitive environment where modern tools are not available. Remember to always choose the right type of stone, be patient and focus on creating a sharp edge, and be cautious when working on sharp edges.
