You do the work once and feed yourself for the next 20 years.

An Asparagus plant can be grown from seed, but it is easier to plant one-year-old dormant plants, known as asparagus crowns, in Late Feb or March. When planting asparagus you need to dig a trench 30cm (12in) wide and 20cm (8in) deep. Work in well-rotted manure to the bottom of the trench and cover the base with a 5cm (2in) layer of the excavated soil.

It is important to start Asparagus soon, as it can take up to 3 years to get a full crop. But once you have done this and the asparagus plants are established they will continue to crop for around 20 years.

What is the ideal location for planting asparagus?

Asparagus is a delicious and nutritious vegetable that can be easily grown at home. It is a tasty addition to any dish and is also great for your health. However, growing asparagus can be time-consuming and requires a lot of effort.

Luckily, there is a way to grow asparagus that is effortless and perfect for those who are lazy gardeners – the lazy way!

Step 1: Choose the right location

Choose a location for your asparagus that has full sun exposure and well-draining soil. The soil should be rich and fertile with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0.

Step 2: Plant asparagus crowns

Plant asparagus crowns in the soil. Crowns are the roots of the plant that are used for planting. Make sure that the crowns are planted in the soil at a depth of around 6 inches.

Step 3: Add compost

Add compost to the soil around the asparagus plant. This will help to provide the necessary nutrients for the plant to grow healthy and strong.

Step 4: Water regularly

Water the asparagus plant regularly. It is important to keep the soil moist but not too wet. The best way to water asparagus is to use a drip irrigation system or a soaker hose.

Step 5: Apply mulch

Apply mulch around the asparagus plant to help retain moisture in the soil. This will also help to control weeds and keep the soil temperature consistent.

Step 6: Harvest the asparagus

Harvest the asparagus when it reaches a height of 6-8 inches. Cut the asparagus spears at ground level with a sharp knife. Be sure to leave some spears on the plant to allow it to continue growing.

Following these simple steps will help you grow asparagus the lazy way. With a little bit of effort, you can enjoy fresh and delicious asparagus from your garden. So, get gardening and grow your own delicious and healthy asparagus!
