In this weeks episode we travel into the High Sierra region of California

We visit a dynamic young family who are living big in a yurt home on their 30 acre homestead / permaculture property.

What are some of the reasons that make the High Sierra region a hub of Yurt life and permaculture?

High Sierra is a spectacular region located in California’s mountainous region. Its dramatic landscapes, breathtaking vistas, and rugged terrain attract a wide array of people, ranging from hikers and climbers to off-grid homesteaders seeking a self-sustainable lifestyle. In recent times, the High Sierra region has become a hub of Yurt life and permaculture. The increased interest in these alternative lifestyles is primarily due to the region’s abundant natural resources, scenic beauty, and unique culture.

Yurt life, a nomadic lifestyle, has become a popular alternative to traditional homes in the High Sierra. A yurt is a circular dwelling with a unique design that is easy to construct and transport. These homes are commonly made from lightweight materials such as vinyl, canvas, and wood lattice, which can be assembled and disassembled quickly. This makes yurts a favorite for those who want a mobile lifestyle or those seeking affordability. Moreover, yurts are energy-efficient, eco-friendly, and adaptable to various weather conditions, making them ideal for off-grid living.

Permaculture is another way of life that has gained popularity in the High Sierra. The region’s rugged terrain offers plenty of opportunities for permaculture enthusiasts to implement their sustainable farming practices, and the abundant natural resources provide an ideal environment for growing crops and rearing livestock. Permaculture involves designing and maintaining agricultural systems that are self-sustaining and based on natural patterns. This entails practices that maximize the use of natural resources, minimize waste, and build soil fertility.

Living in a yurt is a perfect fit for the permaculture lifestyle in the High Sierra. The circular structures, being lightweight and mobile, can be moved to different parts of the land to take advantage of changing climatic conditions. This enables permaculturists to cultivate the land sustainably and improve soil quality by implementing rotational grazing techniques or cultivating multiple crops in one area, for instance. Moreover, the construction of yurts is simple, which allows owners to construct them with locally available materials, minimizing their ecological footprint.

In conclusion, Yurt life and permaculture are becoming more prevalent lifestyles in the High Sierra. This region provides an excellent environment for those interested in living sustainably, off-grid, and within a community that has a unique culture. The ancient and innovative designs of yurts make them a fascinating option for a home in the High Sierra. Meanwhile, the rugged terrain of High Sierra and its abundant natural resources provides an ideal environment for permaculture enthusiasts to implement their sustainable farming practices.

The High Sierra is, therefore, an excellent place for those seeking a different way of living beyond traditional norms. With yurt life and permaculture, people have found an opportunity to rejuvenate their lifestyle and connect with their natural surroundings, forming a community that respects the environment and utilizes natural resources sustainably.
